.:: Emergence
The leit-motiv of my last weeks. Have you ever heard about it?
Emergence is the process of deriving some new and coherent structures, patterns and properties in a complex system. Emergent phenomena occur due to the pattern of interactions between the elements of a system over time. They are often unexpected, nontrivial results of relatively simple interactions of relatively simple components.
Think about the aunts...can you get it now?
I've read a really illuminating book by Steven Johnson, "Emergence" and then I've discovered a huge world : smart mobs, netwar, grassroots democracy, etc etc.
So exciting!

Ok lo spiego in italiano (anche se è un concetto molto complesso, non è così facile riassumerlo in poche parole..) : pensa alle formiche...il loro sistema organizzativo non è di tipo top-down ma bottom-up, è un sitema emergente! Invece di avere un capo che dall'alto decide come devono comportarsi, le formiche agiscono "stupidamente", regolandosi in base al comportamento dei vicini e magicamente il sistema che ne emerge è un sistema intelligente. Queso tipo di sistema è detto complesso (diverso da complicato!).
Molte applicazioni software sono nate basandosi su questo principio (sicuramente conoscerai giochi come Sim City): fornendo pochi semplici algoritmi alla macchina, si cerca di creare un sistema competitivo in cui alla fine emergano algoritmi "intelligenti".Un comportamento "emergente" si ha nel momento in cui un numero di entità semplici
(agents), operando in un contesto e formando una collettività, danno vita a comportamenti complessi. ...non so se mi sono spiegata.

I think Emergence is a piece of genius: it just turns upside down the way in which we r used to think about organizations. It penetrates deep inside the misteries of self-organizing systems, and the way in which alive beings interact and rationalize their behaviors.
There's so much democracy in this concept - and it helps to understand how chaos contains organization: think of the universe, and the way in which it has organized itself, or just the way in which in Athens, 4 centuries BC, 5000 men were organizing the city with no superior authority telling them what to do and how.
Chaos calls order and order calls chaos, and this dynamic process is maybe the real mistery of the world's essence. Maybe.
